5 Gynecological Examinations That Women Must Know
Through regular gynecological examinations, women can better understand their physical condition, identify issues early, and take appropriate measures to ensure overall health.
1. Pap Smear
A Pap smear is a screening test that involves collecting cells from the cervix to examine for abnormalities or precancerous changes.
Purpose: Detect early signs of cervical cancer or abnormal cell changes, allowing for prompt intervention and prevention. It is important to note that pap smear can detect cellular changes caused by HPV, but it cannot detect the HPV virus itself.
Who Should Do:
-Women aged 21 and older who have sex
-Unusual yellow discharge
-Annual routine checkup
2. HPV Screening Test
An HPV (Human Papillomavirus) screening test checks for the presence of high-risk strains of HPV in
cervical cells.
Purpose: Identify high-risk HPV infections that may lead to cervical cancer. Often performed in conjunction with Pap smears for comprehensive screening. It important to note that the HPV test does not tell if you have cancer, but it detects the presence of HPV (the virus that causes cervical cancer).
Who Should Do:
-Women who have frequent sexual intercourse
-Bleeding from the lower body during sexual intercourse
-The discharge is mixed with blood but it is not menstrual period

Purpose: Detect and diagnose infections or conditions affecting the vagina, such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. Also detect Group B Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria that can pose a risk to the fetus.
Who Should Do:
-Pregnant women
-Unusual yellow-green discharge, like tofu, accompanied by itching/pain
-Suffering from gynecological diseases but no improvement despite treatment
